Where Did the Magic Go?, Doodle #83

The first thing that popped into my head when I heard today’s prompt, magic, was Supertramp’s The Logical Song and the lyrics, “When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful, A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.”  When we are young it seems everything is new and magical. We accept what comes our way with a childlike faith and a lot of questions including the proverbial..why?

Then as the song on to say they, “send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, responsible, practical. And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable, Clinical, intellectual, cynical.” As we grow up and learn in school the wonderment in the world around us fades away. We no longer see the things around with wide eyed faith but try to analyze what we see.

Jesus however in Matthew 18:3 says, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”What he is saying is simple. Have faith like the faith we had when we were children. We did not sit around and try to analyze everything we around us, we simply believed and had faith we could do whatever came our way. As adults we think too much. We need to go back to those carefree days and just have faith.

When I was young I had a lot of cats. Most of my cats were of the grey and brown tabby variety. I also had some whose coats resembled tortoise shells, LaPerms I think they’re called. The variety of cats I owned seemed endless except I don’t think I ever owned a Siamese cat. I still love cats more than I do dogs. Sorry to all those dog people out there.

While I had a lot of cats growing up there is one cat which stands out as my favorite, my Manx. I don’t remember the cat’s name but I do remember the cat had the tortoise shell look with brown around one eye. Why did I like this cat more than the others?  It was that the cat stood out from the others. It had an exotic look which stood out from all the rest. If you don’t know a Manx has no tail but a little stub kind of like a Lynx.

My Manx was a cool looking cat. I don’t know where the cat came from. How I ended up owning the cat or as cat people a cat kind of owns you, but I loved the cat and it’s look. The cat was set apart from the other cats. Thinking back to the Manx it is a reminder to me in my life as a believer of Jesus the Christ I must stand out from others, not because I think I’m better but because of the love I have for others.

As followers of Jesus we must show the love of Jesus to all. Not the ones of we select to give our love to but to all.The Bible says in Luke 6:31, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” If you treat others like crap don’t expect them to treat you like a kind person. Cats are interesting creatures they can sense those people who like truthfully like them. I have news for you so can people. So don’t be hypocritical in you love, be truthful in order to be fruitful.

The final theme for February was gold. I could have gone in a lot of directions with this one but instead I chose to go with a piece entitled “Golden Haired Girl and Her Flowers.” The piece is a simple one done in colored pencil.

The  picture for today is lovingly entitled, “Empty Jewelry Box.” The story behind it is a simple one. The theme for today’s drawing was minerals. Since diamonds are a mineral and also a girls best friend I decided to go the opposite route of simply drawing an empty jewelry box and a worried husband or boyfriend in the background.

The prompt for today, berries. I turned a bunch of ideas over in my head until I came up with the idea a bird eating some berries from a tree. While the piece titled, “Bird and Berries” did not turn out the way I wanted I am still satisfied with the end result. I have set a course recently to learn how to be more adept with colored and watercolor pencils. I have always used pastels and acrylics for their brightness of color.

No offense to all of you who use oil paints or inks but oils are hard for me to use and inks cost more than I can afford. I decided on color pencils and am trying get more vibrant colors in my renderings. I am also venturing out with my drawings because I got tired of doing just landscapes or abstracts.I hope you enjoy today’s offering it is my truly venture into doing a lifelike bird.

There are times when you sit down to create something for a prompt and your mind goes blank. This was one of those times even though the prompt was faces, something I draw all the time. The problem was I didn’t want to draw just another face. Instead I chose to take two faces from an old book, give them a body and create something different. The end result entitled “Makeup Mishap” is not a finished piece but a whimsical piece destined for future revisions.

I love art because it allows you to take what you visualize in you mind and put it down on paper. My process for art is to pick up my pen or pencil and as Uncle Jed would say, “Commence to Drawing.” There are times how ever when you get a prompt for drawing something and the prompt like today’s which involved drawing something to do with water turns into something entirely different then you planned.

Originally I planned on doing a building reflected into a puddle but what I chose instead was to add a gold fish bowl to an illustration of man leaning on a counter. The piece entitled “Gold Fish Bowl Hat,” is my diving into learning how to do simple illustrations. I love working with acrylics but drawing simple illustrations give a quick result to creating something .

In today’s daily challenge the goal was to create a piece of art with the theme centered around bugs. I decided to try my hand at my version of Chinese brush painting. I cheated however and used watercolor pencils. Today’s offering is entitled “Dragonfly.” I can’t believe this is my 50th drawing.
