Daily Drawing #193, Taking Snapshots in the Wilderness

I don’t know about you but I am obsessed with taking pictures. Over the years from my teen years till now I have taken thousands of them. Where they all are now I have some idea. Some were lost in the sands of time, others occupy old dusty photos albums and the rest are stored on a portable hard drive. There are times when I go back and look through some of the photos. Truthfully though most of them I haven’t seen in years. My drawing today is a reminder to us all while it is nice to document our lives with our phones or cameras it is also important to make sure we are not losing out on all the fun while trying to the best picture. I also think if we are going to document our lives it is better to do some videos so when we are gone others will have some reminders they can watch instead of store in a drawer.

Daily Drawing #192, Time to Cat-ch A Break

My favorite part of this drawing challenge is I never know what I am going to draw. Sure I use prompts but sometimes, like today, I just draw whatever comes to mind. The drawing for today is entitled “Trying to Cat-ch a Break.” it is modeled off of the old Popeye cartoons where Wimpy always asks :I’ll pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” In the Bible God tells us in, Proverbs 21:13 ESV, “Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.”

What does this have to do with my drawing? The answer is simple. We are called to care for those who can’t care for themselves. If this means buying someone a meal, then that is what God calls us to provide. The one thing I am reluctant to do is to hand someone money only because I don’t know what they will use the money to buy.  Instead I would give them a grocery card, or take them to an agency where they can receive the deeper help they need. The life of a follower of Jesus is all about giving.

Back in the day, in the prehistoric past we didn’t have water parks or splash parks to frolic in we had garden hoses to spray each other with or took a dip in the local swimming holes. Of course my neighbor had a pool but my friends and I always ended up wading in the local creek. The creek held many fascinations. There were bugs like water striders. On most days you could find minnows or tad poles swimming around in the small ponds during low tide.  In the small streams leading which fed the creek you could find crayfish like critters living under the rocks. I miss those summer days. While splash parks and pools serve their purpose it is too bad many children today will never experience the joy of going out and discovering the wonders of God’s creation.

Daily Drawing #188, You Take the Beach Dear, I’ll Have the Boardwalk

Since my drawing a couple of days ago was the beach I returned today with my little girl and cat at the boardwalk. Growing up I lived forty five minutes from Seaside Park, NJ so I spent some time on the boardwalk. My favorite time to be there was in September when the crowds were gone but the shops and arcades were still open. These were the days before we became recluses playing our games in the phone or a gaming system. I loved the sounds of the arcade, bells clanging, coins going in the slots and much more.I miss those days. Today when I go to the boardwalk in just doesn’t have the same appeal. It is overcrowded and overpriced. In life I guess we must always hold onto our memories because just like everything else they may fade with the passing of time.

 

Daily Drawing #187, Watch Your Reflection

The title of today’s drawing is, “Little Things Can Have A Big Reflection.” The way we live is a reflection of what we believe. As an artist my drawings are a reflection of how much time I put into my craft. The more I practice and draw the better my drawings will be a reflection of my abilities. The same is true of life the more we spend time studying and learning about God and serving Him in big and small ways the more our lives will be a reflection of his love. The challenge for today was to illustrate a famous quote. I chose the one under the lady bug drawing. It is my quote and a reminder to myself about how I need to live each day as a good reflection.

Daily Drawing #185, See What You Really See

Yesterday I felt like creating a little cartoon today well I felt like creating another cartoon doodle. This one is entitled “Looking for the Dragon.”. To create the drawing I cut a piece of paper with a slightly jagged edge and thought what could I turn this into. Then the little picture above popped into my head. The picture is a reminder that there are times in our lives when we fail to see what is right in front of our face.

The reason, we are to preoccupied with our own interests so we fail to see the things around us. There are a lot of amazing things out there so take the time to discover them. The Bible says in,Psalm 119:37 ESV, ” Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.” When we see the world as God sees the world then our hearts will spring to life with a new vision and a new purpose.

 

Daily Drawing #184, Enjoying Your Time in The Cloud

There are times when I just like to hang a simple cartoon out there for my daily drawing. This is one of those times with my drawing “Two Cats Caught in the Cloud.” I am not a big fan of the Cloud even though I use it from time to time to store some photos. Why? You may ask. The answer is simple, storing stuff on the Cloud, or in the Cloud, depending on what terminology you use, gives someone a false sense of security. All you need to do is read or watch the news once in a while and you will see any Cloud server is not immune to hackers.

A lot of personal information as well as incriminating photos have been leaked because people have put there trust in the wrong place.  So the next time you’re thinking about storing something on the cloud think to yourself, “Is this something I don’t want the wrong people to see?” In lieu of the Cloud I use one of those portable hard drives to backup my photos and docs. I think it is a little safer. There are times when it is better to keep your head out of the clouds.

 

 

 

Daily Drawing #183, Playin’ the Game of Four Square

Remember the game of Four Square we used to play in gym class and on the playgrounds. The game was played with four people and the object was to pass a playground ball back and forth until you made a mistake and were out. My drawing today is entitled, “I Love 2 Draw,” and is an homage to the playground version of the game where the squares you drew had lines that were not perfectly square but still you persevered and played the game.

I can’t believe I am halfway through this years drawing challenge. I have drawn 183 illustrations. There are quite a few I am going to be offering soon as art prints. Some still need work and a few are going by the wayside. Some of things I’ve learned over the last six months is that in order to be a better artist you must try new things and attempt to draw those things which in your mind you would never be able to draw. Also I have found a style of art which is to my liking. You will see what I mean because in future drawings that style will show up more and more.

I am also contemplating changing my art group name to Whitty Arts. If you read this let me know about the name.

I started this blog for two purposes, one was to use my talents to honor God and further His message. The second was to develop my talents as an artist. I think I have so far done what I set out to do on the outset. I pray I can finish out the year with many more whimsical and colorful drawing. Check back each day to see what comes your way.

Daily Drawing #182, Livin’ the Fantasy Life

One thing I like about being an artist is when my pencil goes to paper what was one a fantasy in my mind suddenly takes shape. Truthfully it almost never comes out as I envision the piece. Another thing I like about art is the ability to create something out of this world in the true fantasy realm like today’s drawing. “Little Fairy in the Woods.” This is not a finished piece because I am just now working out the details of turning something I can see in my mind into a real image. I have cartooned before but creating a more detailed image is harder. Well I have a half a year to go.

While on on the subject of fantasy. I hear from many about the fantasy world of Heaven. When I hear people speak that way I am saddened. Heaven is not a fantasy. It is a reality and some day when I face to face with Jesus I will be both awe struck, a little fearful but filled with joy when I hear the words, “Welcome good and faithful servant.”  So look to fantasy and whim to create your art but remember Heaven is for real and hopefully someday I will meet up with other artist and we can have a wonderful time creating and worshiping together.
