1001 Drawings, #333 Don’t Myth The Truth

Growing up I loved to read all the Greek and Roman myths. I loved the strength of Hercules and the failure of Icarus to listen to his father’s warnings. As I grew older I started to come to know people who read the Bible. they would tell me of the stories of Noah and Samson among others.

At the time I made the myth-stake of thinking the Bible and all it contained was just a bunch of stories or just past civilization attempt to rationalize the world in which they lived and all the unexplained happenings. It was not until my late 20’s that I came to know the truth which was contained in the Bible.

I did not come to the conclusion lightly. Being the science guy I am I read and studied other works besides the Bible seeking answers. In the end the answers seemed obvious, God is real, Jesus was, is and always will be who claimed, God’s Son and salvation comes to those who in faith enter into a relationship with Jesus. So don’t myth the truth…seek the truth and the answers will come.

Love is a verb which means it is not stagnant but always moving. Here are some Bible verses about love:

Ephesians 4:2: “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

1 Peter 4:8: “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”

John 15:12: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”

Notice theses verses are all about loving others and in the last verse Jesus commands us to love others. So at this time of year and all throughout the year let not our love be a silhouette but full fledged love others can see. and feel.

Over the centuries many a written word has been penned to a page. Thousands of letter in black and white put down to entertain us, to instructs us, to spread our wishes to others. None of these creations in black and white are more important then the words laid out for us by God in the Bible. In 2 Timothy 3:16, the Bibles tells us that, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” The Bible teaches us about the world and how we are to live as believers. The only thing we have to do it pick up the book, read the words and with God’s guidance place them in our hearts.

Here is another in the handful of self portraits I have done. This however does not have a face for a very good reason. In life we all want to be something other then another face in the crowd. We want to matter, be popular, succeed in life. I wanted in growing, until a few years ago. I learned a lesson one day. What matters in life is not to be or famous, popular or successful. It is more satisfying to be the faceless one who helps those who need the most help not just at this time of year but all year long. Time is a fleeting thing. Why bot use what little time were given in giving back?

I have grown to like drawing these small city and country scenes. The county I live in has many country scenes like the one pictured here. Sadly this is not one of them. I plan on doing more of these pictures and hope to offer them up for sale sometime after the New Year. This means I will need to get out with phone or drawing pad in hand to render the pictures.

I am not entirely sure what a walkabout is but I know it has do to with a spiritual journey. As followers of Jesus we are all a life long walk about. Each day of the journey we need to seek to come closer to God through our service and desire to help others with whom we come in contact. As this holiday season starts with Thanksgiving and marches on to Christmas and New Years let us seek to serve more, love others unconditionally and pass on the joy which is set before us on our walkabout.

I know, I know the saying is supposed to be, “Don’t do anything until you have all your ducks in a row,” but I am a cat person. Life is about planning for what may come but it is not about being consumed by planning. The Bible says in Proverbs 16:9, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” While is in the heart of man to plan his way God ultimately knows what is best for us and may alter those plans or change them entirely.

When I was young I had all these plans for my life, whom I would marry and what career I would have. None of my plans came to fruition. Instead God led me in a different direction even though I tried to keep veering off course. While my life now is not where I want it to be I know it is where God needed it to be in order to serve Him better. So plan your life and retirement because it is always good to be be prepared but don’t be surprised if God alters your plans.

I think in life we spend so much time looking and tending to the big things that we forget to spend some time looking for and enjoying the little things which are all around. You know the small things which God has sprinkled all around His creation. Things like the soft orange glow of a sunrise or sunset, a soft breeze blowing through the trees or the way a small child lights up at Christmas time. The little things are all around us so take the time to enjoy them.

There are times in life when we think we are sly as a fox. When we think we have gotten one over on others but more importantly God. Hebrews 4:13 NIV, has this to say about hiding things from God, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” So in the end we may out fox others we are only outfoxing ourselves when we try to hide things from God.
