Doodle #110, Love the Place Where You Sit

In my lifetime I have sat behind desks in a few chairs at different jobs. Some of the jobs were just jobs, others I’ve loved especially the one at my art desk. I have created many paintings and drawings sitting in that chair, some which you see here each day.

My whole point to this post can be summed up in an old saying, “In order to love what you do, do what you love.” In other words don’t just get a job, get a career doing something you really enjoy, no make that something you love doing. If I had to do one thing over in my life I would not have gotten a job as an artist. I would have probably set my sights on a career as an architect.  An architect is an artist who uses his/her creativity to design building and or landscaping.

The only reason I would not choose fine arts as a career would be the fear it would take some of the joy out of creating. Then again maybe not because being a cartoonist would be a true joy. The main point of all this is again to pick a career path where you don’t feel like you’re working but you feel like are an integral part of the place where you sit.

By the way the current doodle, “Love Where You Sit,” is a loose drawing of me sitting at my current job. I hope oyu enjoy.

Doodle #109, Going Retro, Reliving the Old Life

American’s it seems are into the retro life. What is now old has become the new trend. People flock to antique dealers and the such to by vintage items in order to decorate their homes like their parents and grandparents. Still others, especially baby boomers , buy cars meant to look like cars from the 60’s and 70’s.  I often wonder why.

Is it because they want to recapture some of the best moments of their past life? Maybe, maybe not. I think all the fascination with the past is because we don’t want to grow older. Buying up items we once owned, or driving cars from the past or which look like cars from the past help us hold into our youth. I know I don’t want to grow old either but their is nothing I can do to stop it or slow my aging down.

Buying up the stuff I used to own in my youth will not turn back the clock it will be just more stuff as my daughter in law says, “she will have to get rid off when my wife and I are gone.” Instead I must prepare myself for the last phase of my life by doing what I can to keep myself mentally and physically fit. I plan on spending the time I have left, traveling, drawing and doing all I can for others. It is what I have been called by God to do and plan to do it to the best of my abilities.

My drawing today is an homage to the good ole days. The title is “Pink Poodle Skirt and a Coke.”

Doodle #103, America Stuck in the Dessert

What can said about Americans but that we love our desserts. According to a USA Today article published in 2013 at least, “40% of consumers surveyed say they’re eating desserts after a meal at least twice weekly,” but that number is probably higher.  Why the love for sweets? America seems to have developed a taste for overindulgence for sugar.

I know I am one of those people. As a small child and beyond my mom always told me, “Timmy stop eating all them sweets, it is not good for you.” Now as I age and hindsight being what it is I should have headed her warning.  I, for the last 15 years, am a diabetic. Part of the root cause was eating too much sugary foods and soda. The other part was being to sedentary. Truthfully my doctor told me I would have developed diabetes at some point in my life, but I could have put it off for many more years had I been in better health.

Today’s advice is both Biblical and just that advice. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 9:27, “But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” In other words avoid the sweets and other things bad for you and eat right. Also make sure not to be sedentary and keep moving. I wish I would have sought to be healthier when I was younger maybe I would have been in better health now.

Doodle #102, Bee Smelling The Flowers

Bees are important to our ecosystem. They pollinate flowers. They make honey. Still many people see bees as pests.  In the same way we as followers of Jesus can also be considered pests if we are pron to fly around stinging people with our words. As Christian we are meant to be the ones who pollinate the world with love using words like honey. 

It does not mean we condone wrong doing. It means we are not to judge others lest as the bible says, “We will the ones judged.” I have lived a life full of flaws so I always seek to remember those times when I made mistakes. This helps me keep a humble heart which seekers to help others not hinder them.

Doodle #97, Life Among the Leaves

It is spring once again. The world is sprouting with new life. Flowers are popping out of the ground and trees are getting their new leaves. Spring has always been my favorite time of year because the earth once again filled with pageantry and color. As an artist color is one of my favorite things to put in my paintings. Color can bring forth a whole range of emotions. Reds and yellows are warm colors and invoke feelings of happiness but they can also be irritating to the eyes. Blues and darker colors are more relaxing and invoke feelings of melancholy and are more relaxing colors.

A lot of the paintings I do tend to be filled with warm colors. It is not really intentional. It is just where my artist’s brain gravitates. One of things I am trying to learn in doing this doodle challenge is how to get out of my color comfort zone and experiment with different color variations or maybe no color at all. I have learned different colored markings in pen and pencil can create a satisfying effect

Another thing I learned is just like the,”Little Boy in the Tree,” my illustration for today, unless you learn to be adventurous and experiment with things as an artist you will never grow as an artist or for that matter life will never be as interesting as it might be if you climb out of your comfort zone

Doodle #96, The Early Bird Gets the Worm

When I heard today’s prompt word, worm, right away I thought of the old adage, “The Early Bird Gets the Worm.” The gist of the adage is the idea if you wait long enough what you desire may not be there. Over the course of my life time this adage has meant different things. When I was young it meant I worked ahead in school in order to insure I was ready to go out and play after school.

As I grew older the saying took on many different meanings but the one I forgot was preparing for later in life. The early bird starts to put away for retirement as soon as possible. They do not wait for the time when the worm (money) is needed to get them through. The early bird is left with a nest egg. The late bird, well they not only don’t get the worm they may not have enough left in their nest to get them through. My advice, be the early bird. Start saving now.

Today’s prompt is the word, nest. The drawing is entitled, “Girl With Nesting Hair.”  I am sitting here writing this wondering when my doodle challenge also turned into a inspirational challenge. Somewhere along the line I decided if I was going to draw something every day I may as well a few words to my posts. Since I am older and on the edge of retirement i guess those words have turned somewhat informative and inspirational.

I am not one when asked who will bot hesitate to talk about my faith and how much Jesus means to me. I am also one who has been through a lit in my life and want to share in case maybe you are going or have went through the same thing and just need a few words of encouragement. My wife and I have been empty nesters since last August. I must admit for me it was more traumatic than my wife. Don’t get me wrong my wife misses our children but my son and I had like interests. We could converse about those interests for long periods of time.

I miss those conversations in fact so much so some of those interests, like super hero movies and shows have lost their luster. I say this because if you’re an empty nester or close to being one I urge you to start to develop new interests with your wife. She will be the one who is also craving for something to do with the rest of her life. Start to travel, go places, do something together but find some way to channel the energy you used to use for raising your children.

Cats are Cool Creatures, Doodle #85

I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not but I seem to have a fondness for drawing and doodling cats. The reason is I think cats are the coolest creatures. Like the Fonz in the old Happy Days show cats do things on their own terms. When my son was still at home and had his cat in my house I was often reminded of how much a cat runs the show.

On the other hand cats can also be loving and affectionate. They will curl up next to you on the couch, walk on you in the middle of the night and meow like crazy until you show them some love in return.

My doodle today is “Ode to Cat People.” I hope you enjoy the drawing.

The Joy of it All, Doodle #81

Joy can be found in many places in life. I find joy in creating art like today’s offering, “Lollipop Flowers” which is a silly drawing meant to create a smile.  However the most joy I get in life is helping others.I am an Ed Assistant in a urban school district. At this point in my life it is not the ideal job to have looking towards retirement but I love helping the students in my class.

It brings great joy to my heart when I help just one of my students learn something new. In life
