1001 Drawings #329, A Faceless Self Portrait

Here is another in the handful of self portraits I have done. This however does not have a face for a very good reason. In life we all want to be something other then another face in the crowd. We want to matter, be popular, succeed in life. I wanted in growing, until a few years ago. I learned a lesson one day. What matters in life is not to be or famous, popular or successful. It is more satisfying to be the faceless one who helps those who need the most help not just at this time of year but all year long. Time is a fleeting thing. Why bot use what little time were given in giving back?

I am not entirely sure what a walkabout is but I know it has do to with a spiritual journey. As followers of Jesus we are all a life long walk about. Each day of the journey we need to seek to come closer to God through our service and desire to help others with whom we come in contact. As this holiday season starts with Thanksgiving and marches on to Christmas and New Years let us seek to serve more, love others unconditionally and pass on the joy which is set before us on our walkabout.

There are times in life when we think we are sly as a fox. When we think we have gotten one over on others but more importantly God. Hebrews 4:13 NIV, has this to say about hiding things from God, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” So in the end we may out fox others we are only outfoxing ourselves when we try to hide things from God.

In the high school I work at I come in contact with a variety of people. Some of them have developed their own styles or looks. the sad commentary on our society is that we judge many of those we come in contact with by what we see. I have learned from early on in life not to make a decision about anyone by how they may choose to dress or look. I always seek to know a person’s heart where the truth of a who a person is lies. So my advice is to try and do the same. Seek to get to know someone whom you might have otherwise not have any interest to know.

I grew up wanting to be a cartoonist. While I am no Charles Schultz from time to time I like to draw a cartoon just for old times sake. The cartoon today is entitled “A Girl’s Best Friend.” The reason for the drawing is that many times is life we come across a friend who like a girl and a dog which on the surface do not go together. I have known many like that over the years. One of those is our relationship with God. On the surface how can a totally Holy God have any friendship with beings who are mentioned in the Bible many times as sinful. The answer is Jesus. He is the one who came over two thousand years ago to be the bridge to a friendship with God. Don’t take my word read the Bible, examine it and then decide for yourself.

Daily Drawing #307, Catch A Falling Star

When I was young you could find me on many nights looking up into the sky looking for falling stars. I believed in the old adage when you wish upon a falling star your wishes would come true. Since many of those wishes didn’t come true I guess I can give some of them away.

Like Charlie Brown I wished the girl who lived across the street from me would see me as her boyfriend. I wished to be one of the cool people at school. I wished to be good at something. These were only many of the wishes which went unanswered.

I know now many years later life is not about wishing on stars but putting your faith and trust in Jesus. He is the one who has the wisdom to guide me through life in order to avoid many of the pitfall which normally strike.

I have an obvious metaphor to go with today’s drawing. In life we are going to up against many walls. There are times when we must take our time to walk until we reach the end of the wall. I have lived through a couple of those, like cancer and debt reduction. There are other times when we must climb up over the wall and see what exists on the other side, like maybe a new life. One of these is the moment you decide to follow Jesus. It only takes a moment to bend the knee and climb over the wall. Think about it.

Giving the gift of merriment is something each and every one of us can do each day. A good example is just passing a smile to everyone you meet or giving a heart felt hello. I know what you’re thinking, “but I don’t feel like smiling everyday.” Truth is me neither. At one point in my life I suffered from depression but I set my mind on not passing on my down feelings to others. Instead I decided to pass on a smile and a hello each day.. I still do it to this day. I’m not saying it will work for everyone but at least give it a try. I must also add if you’re suffering through any kind of depression or any other related illness please seek out a Biblical counselor.
